Floods kill two in Mzuzu

At least two people have died in flash floods that have hit some areas in Mzuzu City.

Mzuzu Central Hospital Administrator Timothy Soko confirmed the two deaths, saying a mother and her two female children were rushed to the hospital Thursday night after the walls of their house fell on them following the flash floods.

According to Soko, the two children—an 11 year-old and a seven-month-old child—did not make it.

Two houses are also reported to have collapsed in Hilltop and Masasa locations while others and roads have been submerged.

Random checks by MBC crew has also revealed that parts of Chibavi, Chibanja and Chiputula are in water.

Most locations in Mzuzu lie in very low areas with the worst being Chiputula, Ching’ambo, parts of Chibanja, Chinese and Chibavi. They are located close to Lunyangwa river, and prone to floods.

Meanwhile weather authorities say the flooding in the North will not cause flooding in the Shire River. They say this is so because the water levels in Lake Malawi were already low.
