The storms have also damaged an office block, electricity poles and three cells at the prison.
Officer-In-Charge for Maula Prison, Raphael Mshali said the injured have been treated as outpatients at Kamuzu Central Hospital.
“All prisoners were in the cell during the time of the accident. We took charge and rescued those that were injured and rushed them to hospital. Despite having some buildings that have been blown off, security for all the prisoners is tightened and there is nothing to worry about,” explained Mshali.
Minister of Home Affairs and Internal Security, Grace Chiumia visited the site and said government is doing all it can to restore the situation at the facility bearing in mind that inmates are supposed to have adequate security all the time.
“We are speeding up the process so that we secure all prisons. We will involve other departments especially the Department of Disaster and Risk Management to assess the situation so that we replace the roofs that have been blown off. We expect that some cells will have been completely roofed by the end of today,” explained Chiumia.
The storm has affected some parts of Lilongwe City, blowing off roofs, uprooting trees that have ended up blocking roads and damaging cars in the process.
