President Mutharika was on his way from Bingu International Convention Centre (BICC) where he had presided over the commemorations of International Day of Peace as well as the launch of the National Peace Policy, when he branched off to visit Tembo, fondly known as JZU in political circles.

Tembo, now aged 85, was until 2014 the country’s longest serving member of Malawi Parliament, whose political career dated from as far as 1960.

He was replaced as President of the MCP in August 2013 by Lazarus Chakwera, who also succeeded him as leader of opposition in Parliament in 2014.
