As hunger looms in the country due to the poor harvest, State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika has appointed an inter-ministerial committee on Hunger situation to help address the problem.

According to a press release, signed by the Chief Secretary to Government George Khondiwa, the committee which was appointed on 10 April, is to be chaired by Goodall Gondwe, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development.

Members of the committee are Allan Chiyemebekeza, Minister of Agriculture, Irrigation and Water Development and Joseph Mwanamvekha, who is the Minister of Industry and Trade.

“Its major task will be to look at the looming hunger and come up with strategies and ways on how the country should respond to the impending hunger, “says the press statement.

The statement further disclosed that the Committee will be supported by technical officers from the relevant government Ministries.

Agricultural experts have predicted that Malawi will be hit by hunger due to the poor harvest which has been contributed by the heavy rains that hit the country in January this year.

The rains left over 150,000 families affected with their crops washed away and property destroyed in the process.
