MCP, through its Dowa North East Parliamentarian Sam Kawale gave notice under Standing Order 74, as read with Standing Order 140 (4) to move an amendment motion to vote 275 for Subvented Organisation and specifically MBC.
Kawale, who is also Chairperson for Parliamentary Media Committee said: “That vote 275 be reduced by One Billion, Eight Hundred and Seventy Nine Million, Seventy Nine Hundred And Sixty Two Thousand, Four Thousand and Ninety Nine Kwacha and be given One Kwacha in respect to the allocation for Malawi Broadcasting Corporation.”
However, when the motion hit Parliament, it was defeated. Out of 115 Members of Parliament present, 74 voted against the motion, 40 voted in favour while one abstained. 77 members were absent.
Apparently, MCP wanted to subject innocent 500 MBC employees to unnecessary suffering, on top of crippling the operations of the public broadcaster as the country draws towards 2019 elections.
