Speaking during the event, Mhango said government intends to complete construction of the bridge after the contractor working on the said road abandoned the project which also affected the bridge.
“The bridge is of much importance to the people in the area; they are using a small bridge which does not accommodate big vehicles, hence prone to accidents,” said the Minister.
The Minister added that the bridge has economic benefits which will uplift people’s livelihood.
“We expect an improved transportation of agricultural produce between people at opposite ends of the bridge, an improved trade for people of Eswazini, Emoneni, Yesaya Nkosi and other areas across Mzimba River to main market, easy accessibility to schools, access to hospitals and clinics,” said Mhango.
The construction work is also expected to create job opportunities to people around Group Village Headmen Hezekiah Mwanza, David Mumba and Madondolo among others.
Traditional leaders and many people turned up for the event which is set to shape the economic and social status of the area.
Government of Malawi is funding the project through fuel levy at a total cost of 431.8 Million Kwacha.
The project is in line with the Transport Master Plan and the Malawi Growth and Development Strategy. Meanwhile, contractor Sitbec Limited is already on site.
