13 years IHL for defilement

A magistrate court in Dedza has sentenced a man to thirteen years imprisonment with hard labour for defiling his eleven year old niece.


The victim who is an orphan was staying with her uncle, a 32 year old man, Reuben Chikoti at Chiutsa village under Traditional Authority Kaphuka in the district.

According to state prosecutor Inspector John Chigundu, who is head of prosecutions at Dedza police told the court that on 23 August this year the girl fled from her uncle's house to a friend within the village claiming she was being ill treated.

The court heard that the uncle, forcibly took the niece from where she sought refuge, and dragged her into nearby cemetery where he defiled her.

It is reported that the girl, in the morning, reported to her friends, who later reported to the victim’s relatives. The matter was reported to Linthipe Police who arrested Chikoti after the girl tested positive to defilement at Diamphwi health centre.

First grade magistrate Anthony Banda sentenced Chikoti to thirteen years, as a deterrent to would be offenders. Both the convict and victim come from Chiutsa village in the area of Traditional Authority Kaphuka in Dedza.
