Minister of Transport and Public Works Jappie Mhango made the remarks at Kasitu in Nkhota kota District when he represented the State President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika during the inauguration liturgy of St Mary’s Parish.
Mhango said the government of President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika will continue assisting in the development of religious institutions in the country.
“The President is thankful to the church; the church is a very good partner of the government. It has schools, it has hospitals and it participates in agriculture issues in the country.
“We believe the development at this parish will change the scenery of the area, the school will assist children from the area, the health facility will also assist a lot,” said Mhango.
He further pledged government’s commitment to connecting the area with essentials like water, electricity, security among others which will help in the development of the area.
Initially St Mary’s Parish at Kasitu in Nkhota kota was a substation of St Joseph Parish in Nkhata Bay of Mzuzu Diocese. The development is part of the churches strategic plan to ensure the priests and other leaders of the church are close to the members.

Meanwhile, Bishop of Mzuzu Diocese, John Ryan has commended its partners for working tirelessly in the implementation of the strategic plan which has since seen the establishment of seven more parishes in a short of period of time.
“In the early days it was a mere dream but we now witness the fruits of the dream, all is nothing but the kind heart the people have for the diocese; it just amazes me, the energy, the enthusiasm in the priests, sisters and other members including generosity,” said Bishop Ryan.
Currently the St Mary’s Parish covers a population of 2800 people and is mobilizing resources for develop the area with schools, clinic, cathedral and priest houses.
Mzuzu Diocese covers an area of 27000 Kilometers, largest of the 108000 kilometers the Catholic Church reaches out to in the country.
