Government says it has no intention to muzzle the press as it believes in freedom of speech. Minister of Information, Communications Technology Nicholas Dausi made the remarks in parliament in response to concerns raised by Member of Parliament for Lilongwe Central, Robin Lowe who said wanted to know whether the Minister was aware that the Malawi Broadcasting Corporation continues to broadcast what he called ‘hate speeches’ and biases despite the House passing a motion to stop such practices.

Eid Ul Fitri in sight

The Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development is informing the public that an advice from the Muslim Association of Malawi says the new moon marking the end of the Holy month of Ramadhan will be sighted on either Thursday 14th June 2018 or Friday 15th June, 2018.


Such being the case, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development further wishes to inform the public that if the new moon is sighted on Thursday 14th June, then this year’s Eid Ul Fitri Public Holiday will be observed on Friday 15th June, 2018. Otherwise if the new moon is sighted on Friday 15th June, 2018 then the Public Holiday will be observed on Monday 18th June, 2018.


The Ministry further advises that announcement on the actual sighting of moon will be made by the Muslim Association of Malawi. The Ministry is therefore wishing all Malawians in the country and the general public a happy Eid Ul Fitri Public Holiday.
