Malawian surgeons separate conjoined twins

Local team of surgeons have on Thursday successfully separated conjoined twins at the Mercy James Institute for Pediatric Surgery and Intensive Care Unit, a component of Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital, QECH, in Blantyre.

Eric Borgestein led a team of pediatric surgeons to perform the procedure at the Unit.


Said the hospital’s twit confirming the news: “Dr Borgestein and his pediatric surgical team have successfully separated  the conjoined twins at Mercy James Centre #QECH. Operation went smoothly and the children are admitted in the Pediatric ICU.”


Mercy James Institute was built with funds from US pop star Madonna and was named after her 11-year-old daughter Mercy James she adopted from Malawi in 2009. It was opened on July 11 2017.


Borgestein is a Malawian born pediatric surgeon, who serves as a Professor of Surgery at the College of Medicine, which is a constituent college of the University of Malawi, UNIMA.
