Tedzani III to generate extra 5 megawatts

Electricity Generation Company of (Malawi) Limited (EGENCO) says ongoing rehabilitation works at Tedzani III power station is vital as far as electricity generation is concerned in the country.

Speaking on the development EGENCO Public Relations Officer, Moses Gwaza, said they are impressed with the determination of the contractor towards the work on the ground.

“We are sure the work will be done on agreed time frame and so far we have replaced panels and now we are working on the transformer,” said Gwaza.

The project started on 20th August and is expected to be completed in December this year.

The main works being carried out involves the turbine rehabilitation, modernization of the machine controls, upgrading of generator and transformer and other works. This will result into obtaining of additional five megawatts to the current 26 mw from the machine.

“Once the project is completed the unit will produce 31MW capacities and become more efficient and reliable,” explained Gwaza.

This is the first major rehabilitation and modernization work to be carried out on the machine since it was commissioned in 1995. According to hydro power machines operating standards, rehabilitation has to be carried every 15 to 20 years.

EGENCO assures the public and stakeholders not to panic as this rehabilitation works will not affect supply and availability of electricity in the country.

The rehabilitation works is being carried by Austrian contractor called Andritz to the tune of K6.2 billion and EGENCO is sole financing the projects.
