Chikwawa Police Public Relations Officer Foster Benjamin confirmed the arrest on Thursday, saying Batson of Kandeu Village, TA Kasisi in the district was arrested last Friday.

"Batson and a colleague currently at large were fishing in Shire River on the material day when rangers patrolling the eastern side of Majete Wildlife Reserve spotted them. Immediately a manhunt ensued after the suspects took off, leaving behind their fishing gear," said Benjamin in an interview on Thursday.

Benjamin said the rangers managed to apprehend only one of the suspects as the other bolted.

"They brought him to Chikwawa Police where he has been charged with illegal entry, conveying weapons and fishing in a protected area," he said.

According to Benjamin, if convicted, the suspect faces a maximum fine of K2 million or in default serves a 4 year jail term with hard labour.
