Police in Zomba have arrested a 30 year old man for allegedly wounding his wife after she contemplated divorcing him.

The suspect, Ricks Kameza, is said to have hacked his wife, Brenda Kapyola at Sitima Village in the area of Traditional Authority Mlumbe in the district.

According to Zomba Police Station Public Relations Officer, Sergeant Patricia Sipiliano, the couple has been together for five years until the husband migrated to South Africa for green pastures.

While in South Africa, the man got informed that the wife at their rented house in Chirimba, Blantyre had an extra marital affair. In June, the husband came back home from South Africa and in August the family travelled back to their home village in Zomba to iron out the differences.

The two slept in the house of the wife’s parents waiting for discussion with marriage counselors the following day, but later at night, the wife discovered a knife hidden under a pillow.

Confronted on the issue, Kameza confessed before her that he wanted to attack her. The  following morning, reconciliation failed to take place as the wife insisted on divorce.

The wife lodged a complaint with victim support unit at Thondwe Police but on Wednesday night, Kameza broke into his house and hacked her with a panga knife leaving her with multiple stab wounds. The suspect fled from the scene before surrendering himself to the police at Thondwe.

One of the country’s gender activists, Maggie Kathewera Banda, who is also Executive Director for Women’s Legal Resources Centre - WOLREC condemned incident.

“It’s pathetic to see that we still have men in our societies who regard beating their wives as one way of resolving their differences,” said Kathewera.

However, Kathewera called for unity among stakeholders in the fight against domestic violence in the country.

Ricks Kameza, who is expected to appear in court soon hails from Magombo Village in Traditional Authority Mlumbe in Zomba District.
