Dr. Chaponda was answering three counts of illegal possession of foreign currency without permit, giving false information to Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and corruptly attempting to obtain an advantage for Transglobe, all related to the controversial purchasing of maize from Zambia.

Chaponda’s lawyer Tamando Chokhotho confirmed the acquittal by the Zomba Chief Resident Magistrate Court.

“We are very happy that our client has been acquitted. It vindicates what we have been saying all along,” said Thamando Chokhotho, lawyer for Chaponda.
