The two leaders were speaking during a bilateral meeting held in Beijing, China. The Chinese leader Xi Jinping spoke highly of the cordial relationship existing between his country and Malawi which is much to the benefit of people in the two countries.
He expressed optimism that the bilateral ties will continue to flourish as the two countries collaborate in a number of key areas.
President Jinping commended the Malawi leader for fully supporting the China-Africa Summit which is a platform that strengthens China-Africa ties.
In his remarks President Prof. Mutharika said he highly values the progressive bilateral ties saying there’s enough evidence on the ground on the gains the country has realised after taking a bold strategic decision to have bilateral ties with the People's Republic of China.

President Prof. Mutharika then commended China for initiating the Forum on China–Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) Summit. He said this creates space for discussing and formulating crucial development interventions for the mutual benefit of the citizenry in the countries.
Later in the day the Malawi leader met the Chairman of the National People’s Congress (NPC) Li Zhanshu where similar sentiments by the two parties were made.
