The Development Broadcasting Unit (DBU) is working with Tasamalidwa Radio Listening Club and other committees around Matokora forest in implementing the Matokora Reforestation Project. The Project is funded by the Malawi Environmental Endowment Trust (MEET).

Tasamalidwa Radio Listening Club is one of the clubs established by the Development Broadcasting Unit (DBU), a semi-autonomous, non-profit unit of Malawi Broadcasting Corporation. The club was formed in 2010 and it is based in Chiradzulu district and has 12 representatives from 15 villages. At first, the club was formed with an aim of tackling issues associated with HIV and AIDS. However, because of various environmental challenges happening in their community, the club diversified its focus to undertake for various environmental initiatives in the area. The club members together with Matokora Forest Committee, Village Development and Community, Policing Committees have been involved in a number of environmental activities including establishing tree nurseries in preparation for the next tree planting season. Matokora forest covers 120 hectares of land. To date, the committees have planted trees in the forest area covering 25 hectares of land. The committees have been mobilizing resources at local level for implementation of their activities.

To expand their scope further, Matokora forest committees with support from DBU developed a proposal seeking for funding from Malawi Environment Endowment Trust (MEET). The proposal was successful and now MEET has granted the communities around Matokora forest funding to promote tree planting and management of the forest.

The project is implemented in Group Village Headman Malika under Traditional Authority Mpama in Chiradzulu district. The villages that are taking part in this project include:Malika, Malikampenya, Lukongolo, Ngumwiche, Katoleza, Malindi 1, Useni, Likalawe, Kanjuchi, Mataka, Nangaonde, Kamwendo, Mkwita, Lupinga, and Matandika village The main goal of the project is to mitigate effects of climate change by promoting sustainable conservation and management of natural resources. Through this project it is expected that the area under reforestation around Matokora forest will be increased; 15 tree nurseries established (one in each village); 300,000 trees planted by 2017; management by-laws established and enforced; capacity of communities in natural resources management will be enhanced and capacity of communities in bee keeping enhanced by 2017. The project will run from July 2015 to September, 2017 for a period of 24 months.

MaLamulo Akutinji  ( What does the law say) - 14:30 (Radio 1)

Malamulo Akutinji is one of the programmes produced at Development Broadcasting Unit – DBU. It is a magazine programme that explores issues relating to the laws of Malawi. The programme strives to provide information and interpretation of the Constitution and Acts of Parliament.

The Malamulo Akutinji programme first went on air in 2010 and remains the longest running magazine programme on MBC Radio 1 that provides tutelage on the laws of Malawi through the involvement of law experts from government institutions, the private institution, non-governmental organizations and law experts from other organizations.

The programme is of 15 minute duration and is aired every Thursday from 14:30hrs.

Tigwirane Manja

Tigwirane Manja is one of the programmes produced at the Development Broadcasting Unit (DBU).  It is broadcast every Saturday from 15:30hrs on MBC Radio 1.  The program was pioneered by Lawrence Mtimaunenji in 2005. Like most of DBU’s programmes, the content for the Tigwirane Manja programme is recorded by Radio Listening Clubs (barefoot journalists) but production remains the work of the producer at DBU.

At its inception, the objective of the program was to reduce the spread of HIV/AIDS among women and girls of child bearing age. This was the case because at that time statistics had shown that the many women and girls were HIV positive as compared to men and boys. In addition evidence had shown that women and girls lacked negotiating skills to protect themselves from getting HIV.

Women are vulnerable to the scourge of HIV and AIDS because of the physiological and social status. Therefore in order to fight against the spread of HIV among women and girls in the Tigwirane Manja programme, the content of the programme focuses on advocating for changing harmful cultural practices, promoting accesses to PMTCT, HTC, VMMC, ART and uptake of both male and female condoms.

The programme targets women, the youth, men and service providers.
