It is said that the three on the night of 30-31March 2015 broke into the office of the evidence room at Mkukula Court and stole assorted items that included 5 trunks of ivory and a consignment of cocaine which was seized from various suspects and were tendered in court.
The incident comes at a time when government is waiting for the conclusion of many cases of ivory currently in courts which are preventing the burning of over 7 tones of confiscated ivory.
The three appeared before Magistrate Paul Chiotcha of Lilongwe Magistrate Court on Tuesday this week to answer charges of theft.
The accused, Austine Mbisa aged 29 of Fundi village T/A Kilipula, in Karonga district; Chisomo Saukila aged 32 of Sumani village T/A Changata from Thyolo district and the security guard Edwin Kalukusha aged 40 of Kachaso village T/A Kalonga from Salima district. All have since denied the charges and the state is expected to parade 7 witnesses to prosecute the case.
Bail for the suspects has been placed at K 50, 000 each, two sureties and they have to report to Lumbadzi police every fortnight.
Meanwhile, the case has since been adjourned to a later date.
