MHC has announced a rental increment ranging from 50 to 100 percent on all its houses effective July 1, a development that has been described as exorbitant by its tenants. But Malawi Housing Corporation spokesperson Ernestina Lunguzi said the upward adjustment of rentals will enable the Corporation to ably maintain the houses.

“Our adjustment is not limited to one percentage. It varies with the categories of the houses. We could not do otherwise because we are conducting maintenances of our houses across the country. And the adjustment meets the current standards,” said Lunguzi.

Lunguzi further said the institution has conducted maintenances on houses in some districts like Mzimba, Rumphi, Nkhata Bay and Mzimba.

Malawi Housing Corporation (MHC) is a statutory body which was established in 1964 by an Act of Parliament and is wholly owned by Government. The Corporation draws its mandate from the Malawi Housing Corporation Act of 1964 (Chapter 32.02 of the Laws of Malawi).

The Act empowers the Corporation to construct houses, develop plots and maintain existing houses and plots. It is also within the Corporation's mandate to put up buildings other than dwelling buildings and also to dispose of any structure which it has either built or procured.
