Former Minister of Agriculture who is also senior member of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Hon. Dr George Chaponda says his decision to pull out of the Southern region vice presidency race is in the best interest of the party.

Chaponda announced his withdrawal a few hours before delegates to the DPP 2018 convention started to cast their votes.

In an exclusive interview with MBC on his withdrawal, Dr. George Chaponda had this to say: “I decided to withdraw because I come from the same district with one of the favourite candidates, my brother, Hon. Kondwani Nankhumwa, parliamentarian for Mulanje Central. So at this point I strongly felt there should not be two people from the same district competing for the same position.

“I have done my part as Southern region Vice President, let others do their part. I will support whosoever wins as I remain committed to the party.”

Meanwhile, the following positions at the Indaba have been filled unopposed; Treasurer General-Jappie Mhango; National Campaign Director-Evason Chimlirenji; National Director of Logistics-Symon Vuwa Kaunda; National Director of Economic Affairs-Ralph Jooma; and National Director of Legal Affairs which has gone to Charles Mhango.

However, voting continues for the positions of Secretary General, Organising Secretary, Publicity Secretary, National Director of Elections, National Director of International Affairs, National Director of Social Services, and National Director of Youth.
