MEC, NICE fight voter apathy ahead of 2019 polls

Written by  Towera Chisi, MEC Stringer

Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in collaboration with National Initiative for Civic Education (NICE) has embarked on a strategic plan to ensure that come 2019 there won’t be  voter apathy.

The organisations have now mounted campaigns urging people to go and register making them eligible to vote come 2019.

Speaking during the function, Henry Zakeria, District Education Officer for NICE in Balaka, said they are prepared to contribute towards the forthcoming elections in order for the public to cast their votes in large numbers.

Zakeria said that to avoid voter apathy on the elections the initiative has trained and mentored several volunteers in all areas in the districts to inform people on the commencement of registration process and the new technologies such as biometric registration.

“So far NICE has been conducting awareness campaigns in various forms including road shows, drama and so much more so as to sensitize people on the voter registration,” said Zakeria.

MEC’s commissioner Bishop Mary Nkosi said that there are many reasons why people don’t vote and the campaigns have been designed to address such issues.

She said, “Elections should be looked at as a catalyst of development, through elections; citizens are given a chance to choose leaders who facilitate development processes at various levels of governance hence the need to take elections seriously.”

Commissioner Nkosi further added that for the citizens to vote, they must register their names on the voters roll during the fourth coming registration exercise and also called upon all traditional leaders to support voter education programs in their areas so that as many citizens as possible should register for the 2019 tripartite elections when registration exercise commences in their area.

The 5th phase of registration is under way which will run from the 2nd to 15th of September 2018 covering Balaka, Neno, Thyolo, Luchenza Municipal, Phalombe and Mulanje district. The last day of the whole registration process within the country is 9th of November 2018.
