We won’t endorse any politician- Malawi Catholic Bishops

The Catholic Church in Malawi under pressure from some of its members, priests and the general public for openly campaigning for Vice President Saulos Klaus Chilima as presidential  candidate in the next year’s election has distanced itself from such  machinations.

In an interview with MBC on Saturday, General Secretary for the Episcope Conference of Malawi Father Henery Saindi further advised priests, religious men and women, catechists, heads of our institutions, to refrain from making utterances or doing things that can justifiably be perceived as advancing partisan politics.

“For the same reason, we the Catholic Bishops in Malawi, cannot and shall not support or endorse any particular politician. We are asking members of our clergy not to toll partisan line when they are preaching but instead may encourage people to register and go for voting,” said Father Saindi.

When asked on how should Malawians take the Catholic Bishops statement seriously when some Priests and Bishops are openly campaigning for Dr. Chilima, Father Saindi had this to say: “The Bishops have spoken, and have made it clear that whatever perceptions were there, but we maintain that the Church will never toll partisan line.

“Our role as Catholic leaders is to preach on good leadership and sensitise our faithful on the qualities of a good leader, but we cannot tell them who we think a good leader is among those contesting.”

Meanwhile, in its statement released last Friday, ECM has encouraged Malawians to register in the ongoing registration exercise.

“Once again we urge all eligible Malawians to register and vote in the forthcoming elections. Voting in such elections is not only a right but also an obligation of every eligible Malawian. In addition, we call upon all those charged with the duty of managing the said elections to ensure that the entire electoral process is properly managed so that we have truly free, fair and credible elections,” said the Catholic Bishops.
