President Mutharika is accompanied by the First Lady Madam Prof. Gertrude Mutharika.
Upon his arrival at the Airport, President Mutharika was welcomed by Malawi Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Perks Ligoya and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Dr. Emmanuel Fabiano.
Later, Mutharika was driven to Hilton Hotel in Midtown Manhattan where he was welcomed by Minister of Gender, Dr. Jean Kalilani, Minister of Youth, Francis Kasaila, Minister of Health, Atupele Muluzi, Minister of Home Affairs, Cecilia Chazama and Deputy Minister of Defence, Everton Chimulirenji.
Also welcoming the President was Malawi Ambassador to the USA, Edward Sawelengera, Deputy Ambassador Lot Dzonzi and State House Director General Peter Mukhito among others.
Leaving Malawi through Kamuzu International Airport, the President said Malawi is going to learn more from other nations to perfect its path of transformation.
“We have learnt more in the past from the General Assembly as a country and this time around we will also gain more knowledge from the summit to transform our country,” indicated the Head of State.
While in the US, the President will also attend a high level meeting on Global Peace at the Nelson Mandela Summit, the United Nations Private Sector Forum, high level meeting of the General Assembly on the fight against tuberculosis and many others.
President Mutharika is expected to make his address on 25th September. The Malawi leader will also attend and host a number of high level meetings and side events. The events include the ‘He4She’ impact Summit as a ‘He4She’ Ambassador and launch of young people’s agenda.
At the summit, the President will also take advantage of the event to hold bilateral talks with leaders of other countries.
This year’s United Nations General Assembly will be held under the theme: Making the United Nations relevant to all people: Global Leadership and shared responsibilities for peaceful, equitable and sustainable societies.
The assembly is expected to end on 5th October.
