According to Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Dr. Jane Ansah, Chilumpha has since asked for a reschedule of his nomination paper presentation slot, having missed his Monday-allocated-time.

Dr. Ansah told reporters on Monday afternoon that Dr. Chilumpha, who paired Bingu wa Mutharika in 2004 presidential elections, has requested for a reschedule.

“Today, we were supposed to receive nomination papers from four candidates. But only two candidates; Dr. Lazarus Chakwera of MCP and Professor John Chisi of Umodzi Party. Two remaining candidates; Frolence Fulaye, independent has asked for reschedule on the basis that her papers are not ready.

“The Commission has also received a request for reschedule from Dr. Cassim Chilumpha. We have slots available for the two within the nomination paper presentation period,” said Ansah.

The development follows reports that the centre is not holding in the newly formed alliance between UTM, Peoples Party (PP), Peoples Progressive Movement (PPM) and Tikonze Peoples Movement (TPM). Chilumpha is leading TPM- which is an alliance of some political parties.
