Bullets start title defence in style

Written by

Bullets FC put behind their administrative and financial woes to start the defence of the TNM Super League with a flattering 2-1 victory over Silver Strikers at Civo Stadium on Saturday.

Bullets defied the underdogs tag to beat Silver Strikers who had featured the champions two players Tizgobewere Kumwenda and Victor Limbani.

Both teams wasted good scoring chances in the first half.

But the People’s Team stunned Silver with a goal in the 62nd minute from seasoned striker Chiukepo Msowoya scoring a brilliant goal after Silver’s defence was torn apart.

Chiukepo, who was making a debutant appearance for Bullets, connected home a Jaffalie Chande’s cross to reliving his good old days.

Silver fought their way back into the game equalising in the 77th minute through Sam Gunde to put the defending champions on the back foot.

But Yamikani Fodya proved right the Malawi national football team coach’s decision to include him on the call-up list when he delivered a power-packed freekick to hand Bullets the win in the 84th minute.

Bullets new signing Eneya Banda from relegated Karonga United was voted man of the match.

Bullets coach Lyoid Nkhwazi applauded his charges for securing a win on the first game in the new season.

“I am happy and over the moon that we have won our first game,” Nkhwazi said.

“Hard work and determination was all what it took for us to win the game.”

He also said Bullets had good quality players to defend the title despite losing Tizgobere Kumwenda and Victor Limbani to Silver.

Silver coach Stain Chirwa said it was painful defeat to lose at home.

“It is a bitter pill to swallow because we were playing at home but the resulthave gone our counterpart’s way,” Chirwa said.

In another game Surestream FC’s campaign started on a pathetic note having thrashed 4-2 by one of last season’s hot league contenders, Blue Eagles.

John Malidadi Junior was the hero of Surestream disaster having scored a hat-trick and Schumer Kuwali scored the only goal.

Peter Msowoya scored a double for Surestream for the rookies to lose by a respectable margin.

New Super League side Dedza Young Soccer Stars got their campaign to a positive start with a one-all draw against last season’s runners-up Moyale Barracks, Red Lions beat Civo United 2-0 in Zomba, Azam Tigers beat Airborne Rangers 2-1 at Chitowe Ground.
