Carlsberg Breweries Limited Senior Brands Manager Alcoholic Twikale Chirwa said on Tuesday they had committed a one-year extension after the expiry of the initial three-year contract.
“We have been sponsoring the Carlsberg Cup for the past three years however it has pleased the management of Carlsberg Malawi Breweries to come back and sponsor the Carlsberg Cup in 2015,” Chirwa said.
He said the objective of the cup to develop football in the country was fulfilled as shown by the inclusion of teams from lower divisions.
“We feel that inclusion of the teams that do not play in the Super League is no mean achievement. This year we are including 12 teams from each region,” he said.
He said the cup offered a platform for Malawi to develop talent for the national team.
The sponsors have not increased the sponsorship package but Carlsberg has assured of an eventful competition.
“We are going to see a lot of activities in the build up to the match. We will be giving out tickets to our consumers before each match, running promotions but also diversifying the semifinals and finals not only in one region but all regions for people to enjoy the sport,” he said.
“We will have customized jerseys as we did last year. I feel that amount we have set aside is enough to cater our objective of football objective.”
Football Association of Malawi (FAM) General Secretary Suzgo Nyirenda described the development as positive.
“To us this is positive news. We never thought that Carlsberg will come again as the three-year contract ended last year,” Nyirenda said.
He said renegotiations for the contract started three weeks ago.
We started renegotiating of the contract three weeks ago and we are glad that the contract was signed and we are going to have the Carlsberg Cup 2015 edition,” he said.
