The development follows an audience which the Secretary General had on Friday with President Professor Arthur Peter Mutharika at the United Nations Headquarters in New York, in the United States of America.
During the engagement, the Secretary General further congratulated Malawi for “achieving fantastic progress in the area of HIV and AIDS.”
“The Secretary General welcomed Malawi’s response to HIV and AIDS and encouraged further progress,” reads part of the statement issued after the audience.
According to the Secretary General’s office, President Professor Mutharika has since “acknowledged the strong UN response to the El Nino drought in the [southern] region.”
Professor Mutharika is in New York in the United States where he is leading a 19 member delegation to this year’s 72nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
This year’s session is the first for Guterres as UN Secretary following his election in 2016, succeeding Ban Ki Moon.
Earlier, the Malawi leader also had an audience with his Zimbabwean counterpart on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
He said their meeting was important in helping strengthening bilateral ties between the two Southern African nations.
