Vice President Dr. Saulos Chilima was speaking during the launch of the K30 million Mo626 Ice College Basketball Competition at Blantyre Youth Centre.

Chilima said the tournament will build a spirit of team work and unity amongst students within their respective colleges.

"We believe this tournament will help mould responsible future citizens with the requisite character to shape and build a better nation.

Speaking earlier, Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Manpower Development, Francis Kasaila said the tournament will motivate young players to work hard in sports, particularly basketball, to promote the game and also improve their performance.

"This tournament will promote the game of basketball in the country because it will facilitate mass participation and development of talent among university players. This in turn will improve the performance of our National Basketball Team," said Kasaila.

He also hailed the country's second citizen for participating in the launch of this basketball tournament, first of its kind in the country.

Chilima, who came along with his wife, inspired Malawi Colleges Alumni Select basketball team to claim a 46-43 win over Current Colleges Select side during the launch of K30 million Mo626 Ice College Basketball tournament at Blantyre Youth Centre.

Initially, the winning side came from behind to beat the current crop of players, thanks to Chilima's free throws that earned them vital points with only seconds left before the final whistle.

In his remarks Daniel Jere, who represented NBM's Chief Executive Officer, that they have ventured into basketball to keep college students busy as they will be channeling their energies to the game of basketball.

"We want to cultivate a culture of discipline and determination that is embedded in competitive sports," said Jere.

According to him, NBM has embedded three extra innovations to this package; it will be launching Mo626ice airtime purchase promotion for all college students with a NBM Student-save account.

There will also be a best fun award to the team with the best support and cheer leading pedigree, including the highest and the most exciting posts in social media about their team and Mo626ice College Basketball.

The tournament will be played in BASMAL's northern, southern eastern and central zones. The zonal champions will qualify for the regional level where best teams will make it to the national finals.
