The only current lady parliamentarian in the lakeshore district, representing Nkhata Bay West and Minister of Labour, Youth, Sports and Man Power Development, Grace Chiumia, has underscored the need for community participation in development work.

Speaking during a meeting at Chitheka in her area, Chiumia said she has plans to construct additional classroom blocks and hostels at Chitheka Secondary School but that depends on how soon the community can make their 25% contribution in form of sand and bricks.

‘‘I would like to urge traditional leaders in this area to mobilize the community and do their part in this project. That contribution will help make a difference to the students at Chitheka Community Day Secondary School and other institutions where similar projects will be implemented,’’ said Chiumia.

Meanwhile the District Educational Manager for Nkhata Bay District, Kosamu Mphande has welcomed the project saying it will improve the school’s infrastructure.

“Construction of additional classroom blocks and hostels at this school will save more girls from dropping out of school and improve the school’s performance,” said Mphande adding that the construction of a science lab at the institution is at foundation stage.

Deputy Head Teacher for the school, Grayton Mushani, commended the Member of Parliament for the project, adding that once completed, the science lab will go a long way in promoting good grades in science subjects among students.

Currently, Chitheka Secondary School only has two classrooms, make shift offices and, being the only secondary school in Mazamba Education Zone, most students walk long distances to and from the school and many of them fail to attend classes during the rainy season due to bad terrains.
