Athletics Association of Malawi (AAM) President Godfrey Phiri said Banda was selected basing on his impressive performance in local competitions.

Phiri said Banda had been consistent after making his debut in the Ku Chawe Mountain Race sponsored by Sun Bird Hotel on July 18.

He said the technical committee recommended the Moyale Barracks soldier to represent the country at the championship in 5,000m and 10,000m events.

“We asked the technical committee who named Stuart Banda. He is a new comer in athletics but he has the potential to perform better if he is going to be exposed,” Phiri said.

But the athlete will not be accompanied a coach because of financial constraints the association is facing.

“He is going alone but because of a congress for athletics presidents for countries in the country I will also go to attend. So he will be in hand,” he said.

He also disclosed that the athlete would train with his counterparts from other Sadc countries following an agreement they made.

The athlete described the offer as pleasant surprise because he did not expect to represent the country at such a high level competition.

“I am very happy because I have just started serious athletics. I didn’t know that I am that good to be winning local races,” be said.

Meanwhile the athlete left on Friday for Beijing China for the competition after AAM managed to secure an air ticket from Mauritius.

AAM General Secretary Frank Chitembeya was among the people who saw him off.
