GREVIO, Programs Coordinator, Chimwemwe Mhango made the remarks when the organisation planted 6000 tree seedlings at one of the disaster prone areas at Bwengu in Mzimba district.

“This area is prone to disasters, it is situated along the Karonga - Mzuzu M1 Road, and it is annually affected by flush floods. Such a scenario emanates from water from the nearby mountains,” said Mhango.

The GREVIO official hinted that the status has rendered most of the area unproductive hence the gesture which aims at reclaiming the land through sustainable ways of conserving the environment.

The organization has since planted 6000 tree seedlings at the area with similar activities set for other disaster prone areas in the country.

“We plan to reach out to many areas including Phwezi Trading Centre where it recently witnessed disasters,” she observed.

According to one of the forestry officials in the Northern Region, Moses Chilongo the activity will enlighten communities on the importance of conserving the environment and possibly reduce deforestation in the area.

“The deforestation rate has reached over 2% which is alarming, planting trees is therefore important, in the same way people have to care for trees to increase its survival rate,” noted Chilongo.

Leading communities and school children in the exercise, Inkosi Jalavikuwa of the area promised to institute bylaws on forest conservation.

GREVIO was established in 2011 to provide mitigation measures towards sustainable environmental management by rural communities, and provide hope for the upcoming generation.

Since its inception, the organization has mobilized a number of communities to acknowledge environmental degradation and strive to enhance the sustainable use of the environment.
