“The majority of people who seek passport services were coming from Mangochi. We also looked at the distance from Mangochi to Zomba, Lilongwe and Blantyre to process a passport they were struggling. So as government we sat down and thought it wise to have an office in Mangochi”, Chazama said.
Director General for the Department of Immigration and Citizenship Services Masauko Medi says they have made Mangochi an immigration Regional Headquarters because the district is developing fast compared to other districts in the eastern region, on top of that more people from Mangochi go outside the country for different businesses
“Mangochi is developing very fast. The district has more bordering centres to the neighboring countries than any other district in the eastern region. There are a lot of people that comes from Mangochi that requires travel documents for various businesses outside the country. Looking at all the factors we had no choice but to transfer the regional headquarters from Zomba to Mangochi”, Medi said.
Council Chairperson for Mangochi District Council Twaha Salanje says people will make good use of the facility in processing travel documents.
We have been travelling from areas like Makanjira and Monkeybay to Blantyre covering a distance of over 300 kilometers just to process a passport and drivers license. The coming of this office here will help us to cut the costs that we were spending during the processing of our travelling documents”, said Salanje.
During the launching ceremony both the officers and the people that require immigration services have been advised to desist from indulging in corruption. The minister has warned that any person that will be found doing the vice will be dealt with accordingly.
