According to a press statement from the Office of the President and Cabinet, President Mutharika has directed that all civil servants wind up their duties on 21st December 2018 and return to work on 7th January 2019.

The statement further reads that these leave days are for civil servants only and not a declaration of public holiday in Malawi.

“These leave days are meant to enable civil servants to celebrate Christmas and New Year festivities with their families and allow them to have adequate time to travel and return from various destinations during festive season while giving them adequate time to rest,” reads part of the statement.

However, some civil servants who work in institutions providing essential services such as hospitals, police, immigration and airports are required to remain at work and will take their holidays in course of the year in order not to disrupt services during the Christmas and New Year’s holiday.
