Professor Mutharika was addressing the press at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe where he briefed journalists from various media houses about his visit to the United States.

The President said he is setting up a committee to look in the matter which was of national concern.

"Malawi does not have a national conservation policy and this has led to a number of national disasters including floods." said the President.

He said the country needs a long-term policy to conserve its natural resources including trees and rivers.

The President said he was concerned that the country had been destroyed due to careless cutting down of trees and other malpractices.

"I urge all Malawians to appreciate the country’s natural resources. My government is determined to protect the country’s game reserves by training rangers and arming them with the necessary tools." Said Mutharika.

Professor Mutharika said it is also important to sensitize communities around game reserves to ensure they have a feeling of ownership.

The President said he will not protect anyone involved in illegal trade such as export of wood because the law is clear on such matters.

On the Congressional International Conservation Gala he attended in Washington, the President said the function was organized by some powerful congressmen in the United States.

"It was an annual event where I was asked to make a keynote address, and prior to the annual event, there were some monthly conservation gatherings, one of which was held in March." he said.

On maize deficit in the country, President Mutharika said this was due to floods as well as a dry spell in some parts.

He said a committee has been set up to look into the matter and that government will do everything possible to ensure no Malawian dies of hunger.
