Deputy Inspector General of Police, John Nyondo, sounded the warning in traditional authorities Ganya amd Phambala in Ntcheu recently  during an awareness event on ending child marriages.

“ Am warning anyone found on the wrong side of the law will be arrested and taken to court because marrying children in Malawi is a crime,” said Nyondo.

He  urged civil society organisations, traditional leaders and communities to join hands with the police in eradicating child marriages in the district.

In his remarks Inkosi ya Makhosi Gomani V said he was worried that Ntcheu is one of the districts with growing numbers of child marriages.

He did not mince words but sending a strong warning that he will dethrone chiefs condoning the malpractice.

“I feel sad seeing children getting married at a young age. This has an effect of depriving their chances to attend school so they become productive citizens,” said Inkosi Gomani.

On his part World Vision Malawi director of programmes Charles Chimombo asked parents not to marry off their children to poverty saying doing so fosters poverty.

He said, “We hope to persuade communities to encourage children to remain in school instead of sending them into early marriages. Parents, in particular have such responsibilities.

World Vision Malawi back in 2017 launched End Child Marriage campaign in the district which will run for the next 13 years. So far 1,000 girls have been rescued from early marriages.
