Seven people, including three nurses, have died while twelve others have sustained injuries after being involved in a road accident that occurred at Katengeza Trading Centre in Dowa on Monday.

The deceased persons have been identified as, Morris Davie, Haswell Njawala, Alice Mmera, Gift Helemu, Hassan Kapasule, Kelvin Kalulu and Maxwel Makonde.


According to Central Regional Police Public Relations Officer, Inspector Harry Namwaza, a motor vehicle registration number NB 6484 Toyota Hiace which was being driven by Haneck Bimoni was heading from Kaphatenga towards Mvera along Salima – Lilongwe M14 road with eighteen passengers on board.


"Upon arrival at Katengeza Trading Centre the vehicle’s rear side tyre busted and the driver lost control of the vehicle and swerved to the extreme offside where the vehicle overturned twice," he said.


He said the accident occurred due to speeding as evidenced by the distance of 160m which the vehicle moved from the point the tyre busted to the point of impact where it overturned twice.


Seven passengers were pronounced dead at Salima District Hospital in which five sustained head injuries and the other two sustained neck fractures.


The driver sustained fracture on left leg and arm and has been referred to Kamuzu Central Hospital for further treatment. 11 passengers escaped with minor injuries.
