MultiChoice Malawi Marketing Manager Chimwemwe Nyirenda announced in a statement recently that the digital satellite television provider has hiked prices of GOtv package following the introduction of 10 percent excise tax on television subscription by the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA).
However, on Wednesday night, MultiChoice sent text messages to its GOtv subscribers announcing the suspension.
Reads the text: “It is with regret that we inform Gogetters that we made an error in publishing an announcement regarding GOtv prices. We will inform you of any price increases (as a result of the 10% tax) at a later date. We apologise for the inconvenience.”
Presenting the 2017/18 budget statement, Minister of Finance, Economic Planning and Development Goodall Gondwe said excise taxes have a multifaceted function ranging from revenue generation role to income distribution and influencing consumption behavior of the populace.
“We are shifting reliance, in long-term, on domestic resource mobilization from income and investiment to consumption taxes; and to expand the revenue base, we are introducing 10 percent excise tax on fee based TV services,” said Gondwe.
