Prophet Shepherd Bushiri and his wife Mary have this morning handed themselves to Malawi Police headquarters, at Area 30 in Lilongwe, a day after South African authorities saved International Police (Interpol) with a warrant of arrest for the couple.

Bushiri and his wife, who are facing fraud, theft and money laundering charges in South Africa, fled to their native country, Malawi, in breach of strict bail conditions.

On Monday, Spokesperson for the elite police unit known as the Hawks, Katlego Mogale confirmed to the media that the Pretoria magistrates court had issued the arrest warrant for the two.

Confirming the arrest, National Police Spokesperson James Kadadzera said the move was in response to a warrant of arrest issued by Interpol in Pretoria on November 16, 2020.

“The police launched manhunt yesterday (Tuesday) to arrest the couple. However, the Prophet and his wife handed themselves on Wednesday when they got wind of their impending arrest” said Kadadzera.

The police publicists added that the couple will be recorded statements and taken before a competent court of law “in accordance with the prescriptions of law”.

In a statement published about an hour before handing himself to Malawi Police, Bushiri maintained that he escaped to Malawi “not to seek political intervention [but] to seek justice before the Constitution of the Republic of Malawi.”

The preacher also faulted South African Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi’s address before the Portfolio Committee of Parliament for what he termed “prejudiced” remarks on the process to be followed in revoking his and wife’s permanent residence status in that country.

“This is but one of the many injustices that I feared would befall me and my wife.  This internal process is already prejudged by the Minister before I submit my representations on why our permits should not be revoked because we did nothing wrong,” he said.
