Four hardcore criminals escape from Maula

Two prison warders have been arrested following the following the escape of four suspected hardcore criminals who escaped from Maula prison in Lilongwe on Tuesday.

The two guards have been arrested today following investigations launched by the Malawi police and the prison service over the incident.

It is not yet clear if the four suspected criminals who were serving different counts ranging from murder and Bank robberies escaped with the help of the outsiders or the arrested officials.

According to Prison spokesperson Smart Maliro said the inmates escaped after breaking the fence and cell and they are hopeful that the two will help them in the investigations.

“I can confirm that the incident happened around 4 am Tuesday and really the four escaped.

“Investigations are underway but people must not live in fear as everything is under control and security at the prison is still tight,” said Maliro.

The four are James Daudi of Bonongwe village T/A Chimwala in Mangochi, Chonde Saudi of group village Ngwengwe in T/A Kalonga in Salima, Nix Daudi of Bonongwe village in T/A Chimwala, Mangochi all bank robberers and Edward Majawa a murder of Kabudula village in T/A Kabudula in Lilongwe.

But on Wednesday morning, just a day after the incident armed robbers broke into the house of Lilongwe National Bank branch manager and stole assorted property valued in millions injuring him in the process.

Its not yet clear if the escapees are responsible for the attack.
