However, at the heart of all donations some well-wishers are donating expired maize floor to the flood victims in the Northern Region particularly in the City of Mzuzu.
This has prompted the Department of Disaster Management Affairs – DODMA to put in place strict measures to avoid distributing expired items to flood victims.
Chief Relief and Rehabilitation Officer, Dyce Nkhoma made the remarks following reports that some well-wishers donated expired relief items to the victims in the Northern Region.
“We are putting mechanisms that whenever we receive items from well-wishers, first we need to inspect before giving it to the intended people, we will be unpacking a sample to see if the items are not expired,” said Nkhoma adding that if the items are from outside the country DODMA will be working together with Malawi Bureau of Standards-MBS to check if the items are good for consumption.
Meanwhile, the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services says the Northern part of the country is still receiving rains due to the Elnino phenomenon that hit most countries across the African continent.
Director for the department, Jollam Nkhokwe attributed this to the persistent inter-tropical convergence zone pressure from the Indian Ocean into the country.
