Mutharika said this on Sunday when he attended a service of worship at the Evangelical Church of Malawi’s Nyasa Mission at Mtambanyama in Thyolo.
“I have said this time and again that I am the first Head of State to run this country, for three years, without donor aid. This year, we are funding 99 percent from locally available resources. To achieve this, we must be tax-compliant,” he said.
The Malawi leader further said that for Malawi to move forward there is need for reconciliation, unity and patriotism among Malawians.
Said Mutharika: “I think there is too much jealousy in this country for whatever reason. One time we were supposed to be the Warm Heart of Africa, but I think that heart has become very cold. We are very cold towards each other and we are prepared to destroy each other even in social networks.”
Mutharika was directly concurring with Reverend Charles Mawaya of the Evangelical Church of Malawi, who in his sermon, also emphasized on the need for Malawians to get rid of jelousy and work in solidarity for the sake of progress in the country.
A 124 year old mission was established in 1893 by a Scottish missionary Joseph Booth at Likhubula in Blantyre, before it moved to Thyolo for commercial purposes.
