This was disclosed when Plan International Malawi distributed Likuni Phala to households at Kafucheche camp in Traditional Authority Chimwala in Mangochi.

Floods displaced 2495 households in Mangochi in January forcing people to seek shelter in schools and churches.

But three months down the line some families are relocating to their settlements by constructing temporary shelters following the drying up of water bringing down the figure of displaced families to 308.

According to Mangochi District Council office out of the 308 households 590 are children and require special attention.

Considering that when such calamities hit children get mostly affected, Plan International Inc Malawi has sourced 100 package of 50kg bags of Likuni Phala flour to ensure that the affected children do not fall short of nutrition requirement.

Programmes and Sponsorship Coordinator for Plan International Malawi Billy Mukwikwi this is in addition to training that district and camps committees received on child protection during emergencies.

The flour will be distributed to all the existing six camps across the district. Mukwikwi further said Plan will distribute construction materials for the households to use when constructing temporary shelters as they will be getting back to their villages.

The development has excited Director of Planning and Development for Mangochi Walter Chikuni who commended Plan saying the flour will help address hunger and nutritional challenges the children were facing in the camps.

Chikuni observed that the likuni phala will normalise life for the children in the camps a where some are attending schools in community based children care centres development he said will reduce trauma among the children.

Meanwhile some of the households at Kafucheche camp where there is 25 families have started preparing to get back to their respective villages even though according to some of the families it might take abit longer for them to relocate back as their villages are still not yet dry following heavy rains that poured in Mangochi recently.
