Chibingu sounded the alarm in Lilongwe at an interface meeting between the Ministry and the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) officials.

He said government has come across several dubious land transactions and ownership in the country’s urban centres.

Chibingu noted that corruption in Land management has devastating consequences, citing loss of revenue by government through dubious sale of land as both the seller and the buyer do not pay appropriate taxes to the government.

The Minister warned that time is up for those who sale land dubiously as they will be investigated and facethe law accordingly.

“Foreigners don’t just get land by themselves. It is us weak Malawians who provide this opportunity to them not knowing that in the long run, they’ll be the owners of the country because we’ll have no land in the cities” Chibingu noted.

He added that, “am not saying the foreigners should not have land but they should get land in accordance with the laws.” Chibingu said.

Anti- Corruption Bureau Director of Investigations Daniel Mponda pointed out that land is a scarce natural resource that needs be protected.

“Land being a very crucial issue in the development of our country so it was felt that perhaps if we started with Lands, we would have started with a foundation of spearheading of the initiative” Mponda said.

He further said there is need to improve processes, systems and procedures for land housing management especially closing loopholes that are often taken advantage of.
