Archbishop says Bingu ended hunger, tips GOVT on food security

Archbishop of the Catholic Church Thomas Msusa has hailed the Malawi former president late Prof Bingu wa Mutharika for eradicating hunger in the country during his tenure in office.

Nsusa an influential Catholic Church in Malawi who led a memorial mass of late president Bingu wa Mutharika at Ndata Farm in Tyholo said the Farm Input Subsidy Program(FISP)which is a brain child o the late performed wonders.


"As a church we remember him for working hard to end hunger in the country through FISP and green belt initiatives and I think leaders of today can draw so many lessons from this." said Msusa


His grace Msusa said however tipped government on how the current recurrent hunger can be dealt with once and for all.


"Let’s borrow a leaf from Israel which feeds Europe with fruits harvested from irrigation farming of which its water is taken from over 100 Kilometers away what about us, a country which was blessed with vast bodies of water"


"When the late Bingu dreamed in color on hunger eradication he knew that we can utilize the waters through the green belt initiatives.` added Msusa `Malawi cannot develop if it keeps on thinking about food each and every year".


The late Bingu wa Mutharika died on April 5 2012 from cardiac arrest was and the memorial service was attended by hundreds of Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) supporters and its senior officials as well as Government officials who were led by President Professor Auther Peter Mutharika.

 

"Let us all emulate his life if we want to develop the country,” the Archbishop said, adding that the country was enjoying some of his achievements such as the new parliament building, Malawi University of Science and Technology and the Green belt initiatives.

 

Msusa therefore asked the President to continue where his elder brother, the late Bingu stopped especially by ensuring that Malawi was a hunger free nation.

Some of the guest to the event included former Zambian President Lupiya Banda, Former president of Malawi Bakili Mulizi and former opposition Malawi Congress Party 0o(MCP) leader John Tembo.
