Public owes Lilongwe City Council over MK2.6 billion in city rates

Individuals, Non-governmental Organisations, companies, religious institutions and political parties owe the Lilongwe City Council (LCC) over MK2.6 billion in city rates.

In a statement signed by the Acting Chief Executive Officer Charles Makanga, the council has since given the debtors 30 days from July 5 this year or else they will face unspecified action.


Among the individuals are politicians Rashid Gafar and Raspicious Dzanjalimodzi.


Some of the religious institutions are Christian Council of Malawi, Evangelical Lutheran Church who owes LCC MK3.9 million and MK44.1 million, respectively.


Among the companies are the defunct Shire Bus Lines-MK32.6 million, Associated Tobacco Company Limited-MK12.7 million, Monsanto- MK31.4 million and Zembani Music Company which owes the City K3.8 million.


Topping the list of LCC city rates defaulters is the Malawi Congress Party (MCP) which owes the council a whooping MK272 million.


 According to the Acting CEO Charles Makanga, the published property owners have outstanding city rates for more than three years.
