According to police spokesperson in Nkhata Bay Cecilia Mfune, the accident which took place at the company's camp at Mpamba area within the district involves a motor vehicle registration number ZA 5093 Mazda Bongo minibus white in color. The driver who is not known escaped soon after the accident.

“The unknown driver was driving the said vehicle from Mzuzu heading Nkhata Bay with seven passengers on board; upon reaching the camp he saw motor vehicle Mercedes Benz joining the main road from the Sub camp. While he was trying to avoid hitting the joining motor vehicle he crouched into the other lane where due to over speeding he failed to control the vehicle and hit the pedestrian,” said Mfune.

Following the impact the pedestrian sustained fracture on his left leg and is now admitted at Mzuzu Central Hospital. The passengers in the minibus came out with minor injuries and were treated as outpatients, but the motor vehicle is extensively damaged.

“Overspending is one of the reasons causing road accidents in Nkhata Bay district and this is the eighth accident recorded in 2018. Meanwhile, police are doing sensitization meetings at every trading centre within the district as part of solution to minimize road accidents,” she added.
