The census is being conducted by the National Statistical Office (NSO) with its 25,000 strong data enumerators team.

NSO trained 25,000 data collectors this time around equipping them with skills to do the exercise electronically. With financial support from Government and development partners NSO has been equipped with Lenovo tablets which are being used in data collection other than the traditional way of using pen and paper.

One of the enumerators said they were trained in using the tablet for 6 days and cited some challenges like poor reception they encounter at some houses.

However NSO’s Public Relations Officer Kingsley Manda said that the 2013 Act of Parliament protects the data collectors, and that they trained them on how to present themselves when they arrive at a house for data collection.

Statistics indicate that Malawi’s population has been alarmingly increasing at the annual rate of 2.9%. It is believed that as of 2018 the country’s population stands at a staggering figure of 19,164,728. The 2018 Population and Housing Census will establish the official figure of the country’s population.
