Speaking during the launch held at Mzuzu University in Mzuzu, the Managing Director of Old Mutual, Roy Punungwe, said they have seen the importance of the initiative hence prompted them to come with the sixth edition of the competition.
He said his firm realizes the importance of mathematics in shaping and preparing future leaders of Malawi and Africa as a whole.
“Mathematics filters into every discipline, it’s just not pure mathematics, so I think that’s the exposure that needs to be very clear because with it, you can go into various disciplines and succeed going forward,” said Punungwe.
Commenting on the development, Vice Chancellor of Mzuzu University, Professor John-Kalenga Saka commended Old Mutual’s commitment in supporting the initiative by investing in the youth of Malawi saying after benefiting from this project, students will be enabled to pursue different careers informed by the subject.
“Our young men and women in secondary schools and CDSS, equally girls will really be a key beneficiary and we as university we will implement the mandate for which will exist in this country,” said Saka.
This year’s sponsorship prize has risen with half a million Kwacha as compared to last year.
