A Malawian Minister on Thursday urged stakeholders to build structures that are disability friendly, warning that those who defy the order will face the arm of law.

Minister of Gender, Children, Disability and Social Welfare Mary Navicha sounded the warning at Andsen Primary School in the area of Senior Chief Kunthembwe in Blantyre during this year’s World disability commemoration.

Globally, world disability day is commemorated on 3rd December. The country held the commemoration on 4th December as part of official closure of the disability month which was launched on 4th November.

This year’s commemorations were held under the theme: Promoting the Participation of Persons with Disabilities and Their Leadership.

Navicha said persons with disabilities have equal potential to contribute to the country’s development hence the need to level the ground by eliminating challenges they face.

Among other things, Navicha said her ministry will leave no stone unturned in ensuring that companies and organisations construct structures that are disability friendly, saying those failing to adhere, will face the law.

“The government has put in place deliberate policies to promote the welfare of people with disabilities,” added Navicha.

The Minister hinted that the Disability Trust Fund set by Government will help to economically empower people with disabilities. During the event, people with disabilities also presented a petition to Government.

Geoffrey Wawanya, Chair of the Board of Trustees for FEDOMA,  expressed optimism that the petition will help to iron out some challenges people with disabilities face.

According to United Nations findings, over 600million people have a certain form of disability worldwide, with 20 percent of this population coming from poor families.
