Young women in the country have been encouraged to actively participate in party politics if gender equality is to be achieved.

The call was made at the end of the 2015 Youth Pre-Forum to the Fourth Annual High Level Dialogue on Democracy, Human Rights and Governance in Africa which was convened in Rwanda.

Malawi Representing at the assembly, National Coordinator of the Young Politicians Union (YPU) Clement Makuwa said the event was helpful as it has enlightened youthful politicians on the importance of women participation.

“Many young women shun party politics and this has resulted in them not being properly represented at national level. The conference has given us skills on how we can entice many ladies into joining party politics” said Makuwa.

The conference was held under the theme; Youth Participation and Leadership in Political Parties: A special Focus on Young Women.

Makuwa noted that politics in the country is dominated by older women and this has caused an outcry from young women, a tendency which he described as a drawback to complete democratization in the country.

He said women are most underrepresented in various circles.

“Young women form the largest population at party level yet their influence and decisions remain and continue to be undermined and unrecognized at party level” said Makuwa.

From the meeting, the Coordinator said the YPU will design interventions for its work in 2016 to complement government’s efforts to address the challenges youths and young women are facing to meet the Africa agenda 2063.

The Rwanda High Level Youths Dialogue was attended by members from 54 African nations.
