Late last year the company introduced a second passenger train between Limbe and Nayuchi which passes through Balaka and Liwonde as the single train could not sustain the available demand.
“We were initially going there once every Wednesday and it meant that we had a lot of people boarding since it was once. As a result, we transit time was long as we wait for people to board, put in their cargo.”said Chisomo Mwamadi CEARs communications officer.
He said “To counter these, the second one was introduced.
But the challenge now was that we reduced the number of coaches since we thought going there twice will be a good idea.”
Mwamadi told MBC that after the first two trips, they got a lot of complaints that the coaches were not enough and other people were literally left at stations because of the reduced coaches from around 9 to 3.
He added that in response, the company will from 20th January increase the number of coaches from 3 to 6 or more depending on demand on each day so that we increase the sitting capacity to serve the people better.
